Best Small Towns in Idaho
Located in the Pacific Northwest, Idaho offers some of the most beautiful outdoor opportunities and scenic landscape for active adults seeking fun and entertainment in a picturesque community. Since Idaho is considered to be higher altitude, the winters can be extreme and the summers can be categorized as hot.
Big mountains and flat terrain can be found in the state and provides ample opportunities for just about every recreational activity. Popular retirement communities offer golf, skiing, swimming and more. Below are the best small towns found in the Gem State:
The city of Coeur d’Alene is among Idaho’s most picturesque communities that I have visited. Located on the lake and with a population of just under 45,000 residents, the area offers enough amenities and attractions to enjoy without being overcrowded. While the residential community number is low, the tourists do flock to the area in the summer to partake of the boating and fishing opportunities. The Coeur d’Alene Resort offers fine dining and all sorts of outdoor recreational excursions. The area comes to life during the holidays when boating tours and a Santa yacht ride is offered to the public.
Located in Kootenai County, Hayden holds a population of just over 9,000 residents and is home to the famous Patty Duke. Hayden has experienced bad press in the past as the former home of Aryan Nations, but is actually not where the neo-Nazi group resided. Nearby Hayden Lake is actually where the compound was found. Hayden offers a rich diversity in residents and ample exposure to recreation and popular tourists attractions. Sporting activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking and biking are among the local favorites in Hayden.
While not known for its picturesque scenery, like many other small towns in Idaho, Lewiston is recognized for its hometown environment and preservation of history and state culture. Lewiston offers local restaurants and shopping boutiques that are fun for the entire family and nearby college and river attractions make the area popular among the young and old.
Meridian, Idaho is one of the fastest growing retirement communities in the state. Located just ten miles west of Boise, the buzzing community has a population of 60,000 and is actually considered a suburb of the city. Many high tech companies are found in the Meridian area, and the number of gated and adult communities is on the rise. Meridian is situated close to the mountains and offers many outdoor recreational opportunities.
Known as a resort town, Sun Valley is recognized as a skiing and outdoor recreation hub in the state of Idaho. Sun Valley not only offers the perfect environment for vacationing but also putting down your roots and calling it home. Many wealthy retirees keep a second home in Sun Valley where they can visit throughout the year and take advantage of the outdoor pleasures this picturesque community has to offer. Skiing, fishing, golf, mountain biking and hiking are among the top activities performed in the community.
The Village at Syringa Gardens in Post Falls, Idaho near the beautiful Coeur d’Alene lake, is a 55+ community featuring the security of a gated neighborhood and convenience of maintenance-free living. This wonderful community is surrounded by beautiful scenery with numerous golf courses and walking trails. During the summer residents can enjoy golfing at The Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course, Black Rock Golf Course, Gozzer Ranch Golf Course, and The Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course.
Post Falls is centrally located so residents can quickly go and enjoy the Coeur d’Alene Resort, as well as jump on the freeway to get to nearby Spokane, WA. Home features include a 2 car attached garage and an enclosed patio. There are multiple floor plans to choose from and each home can be customized to fit your individual desires.
