Some Cities and Towns in South Dakota

Some towns may be large, and others are small, but all have great retirement communities. There are some towns with major historical significance, and others filled with art and theater. From cute theme park attractions to an artistic marvel, there is a little something for everyone in South Dakota. Also, the homes there are just as varied.

Sioux Falls, SD

Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota, and is on the list for fastest growing cities in the United States. There are a number of events that occur to keep everyone busy, including a celebration on the first Friday of every month, which is full of live music and special events from local restaurants and stores. With a great mass transit system, it's simple to live a fast paced yet relaxing retirement.

Rapid City, SD

Rapid City is the second largest city in South Dakota, and is known as the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and the "City of Presidents." The city itself is divided by a mountain range, and is home to Mount Rushmore. There are many museums in the city, that are normally only found in larger metropolis areas, and it is a great place to live for those who love art and theater.

Aberdeen, SD

Aberdeen is home to a wide variety of ages, from families to senior citizens. It is also the birthplace of the Super 8 hotel, where it has been since it was first opened in 1972. In addition, there is also a park called Storybook Land, which features attractions from several different children's stories, including the "Wizard of Oz."

Harrisburg, SD

Harrisburg is a suburb of Sioux Falls and has a population just over 4,000 according to the 2010 census, which is 4 times more than the census 10 years prior. This little suburb has an extremely low crime rate, and the majority of households are married couples. It has all the best traits of a small town, with the conveniences of being close to the big city.

Parker, SD

With a tiny population of only about 1,000 in 2010, it is the classic look of a small town. It has a beautiful main street with all the older looking shops, a clock tower at the end, and a total area of town just over a 1 square mile. This little town is home to the Turner County Fair, which is the oldest county fair in South Dakota, having started in 1880. Of all the little towns in South Dakota, these folks truly seem to be the friendliest!
