1. Barrington RI

Once called Borington, instead of Barrington, this small community offers a slow-paced environment with low crime rate and exceptional school districts. Weekend community barbecues may be the biggest thing happening on a Sunday afternoon, but one thing is clear – Barrington’s residents are friendly and loving, especially to newbies. The downtown offers two traffic lanes and plenty of red brick and unique shopping venues.

2. Block Island RI

Located along the beautiful coastal waters of Rhode Island, this small crabbing and fishing community inspires writers and artists from around the world. The Great Salt Pond is fun for kayaking and exploration, while the downtown offers art galleries, rare coin and book shops and fun-filled eateries. The place is buzzing in the summer season with tourists looking to spend some quality outdoor time on the ocean.

3. Bristol RI

The small community of Bristol is great for the foodie at heart. Home to the great Anthony Quinn, the town of Bristol offers fine dining in nearly every genre. Choose from Scandinavian food to the famous hand and home-made ice cream parlor known as Gray’s. The area is filled with some ofthe most elegant and down-home cooking in the state. In fact, visitors from all over the east coast arrive on the scene in Bristol to taste some of the finest fare.

4. Burrillville RI

Think Andy Griffith and Mayberry and you may have just discovered Burrillville. This small community is one of the quietest and most peaceful communities in Rhode Island, offering just over 280 people per square mile. While not a lot of buzz goes on in Burrillville the peaceful atmosphere offers some of the lowest crime rates in the country.

5. South Kingstown RI

Located in the southern part of the state and offering plenty of elbow room, South Kingstown is a beautifully landscaped and green community that boasts plenty of inexpensive property for purchasing. While the community is growing, the rate is slow and steady. Residents of the small town are friendly and inviting despite the close proximity to interstate access and major cities.

6. Tiverton RI

One of the most affordable communities in Rhode Island for empty nesters and the recently retired is Tiverton. This quiet beachfront town offers antique stores, farm stands and a specialty cheese and artisan food market. The locals are hospitable and friendly, never seeming bothered by the occasional touristy remark or question. A large condominium community is located at the north end of the community equipped with meticulously mowed lawns and a beautiful swimming pool.
